Deleted

On my weekly update #8 I mention I was close to been addicted to a game. This week I didn’t play as much but I caught myself opening it out of habit.

After analyzing the game mechanics, I decided to follow Annie’s advice and deleted the it from my phone. I transferred ownership of the account to a friend in the game. I’m sure he’ll have fun and continue to devote time to it. He got an early Christmas gift, my account has 24 million more power than his 🙂

It’s a war game and the main goal is to get stronger. There’s no ‘winning’ or ‘finishing’ the game. I have a bit of an obsessive personality and quickly figured out a way to increase my commander’s power, increase my amount of troops, my defenses, etc. To stay at the top you have to keep playing. I have to give credit to the developers of the game; they did a great job incorporating all kinds of addictive mechanics into the it.

Thanks Annie for your wise words 🙂 You’ll be getting more blog entries this week, such as my riveting No entry earlier today!

  1. “They” didn’t make it addictive. You did. They didn’t incorporate addictive traits, they made the game cool. You did the rest.

I understand your sentiment but you have to take responsibility for your own choices.

    1. You are right Jim. At the end of the day, anything is only as addictive/fun/time consuming as one makes it.

I own up the fact that I made the game fun and addictive to me. I let that happen. I made that happen. I take full responsibility for my actions; for getting addicted to it, but I will also take responsibility for handling it and getting rid of it.

I will also also stand by my earlier comment about the game design. There’s a science field dedicated to behavioral psychology. I know this because at work there’s a behavioral scientist, his specialty is behavioral finance. Behavioral game design is a thing. There are certain traits that make a game feel addictive. This game has pretty much all of these traits.

I know this comment comes on very defensive and I didn’t intending to be.

I appreciate your honest feedback and look forward for more 😄 if you don’t keep me honest who will? 😎

      1. Oh, I have no doubt manufacturers are trying to make the games as enjoyable as possible, the fact that they have psych divisions doesn’t surprise me, at all. They want their product to sell. I was simply trying to let you know that it’s what we do with it that matters.

After all, I’ve never heard of a company pulling a product because they made it too awesome (though I would love to be in on that staff meeting).

Either way, I’m glad you recognized the problem and dropped the game. It’s all good, brother.
